What’s On: “Making Art: Imagine Everything is Real” Exhibition At The National Gallery Of Victoria

Making Art: Imagine Everything is Real is a FREE all-ages exhibition that invites kids and their families to experiment with innovative ways of making their own works of art.

Presented in conjunction with the world-premiere Melbourne Winter Masterpieces exhibition, The Picasso Century, and inspired by the works and artists in the exhibition, Making Art offers four activity spaces where young audiences can experiment with paper collage, drawing, poetry, and large-scale sculptures.

Make a Creature is a digital interactive game allowing kids to produce their own animation inspired by Surrealist game Exquisite Corpse and artist Remedios Varo. In the game, players take turns to draw sections of an image resulting in an animation that can be shared with friends and family.

Inspired by French artist Georges Braque’s invention of papier collé (pasted paper) and his collaboration with Pablo Picasso, Make a Collage invites children to experiment with patterns and shapes to create their own paper collages and produce an accompanying digital animation.

Make a Poem offers children a relaxed space to draw a portrait and write a poem in relation to their artwork. Inspired by Russian artist Natalia Goncharova’s series of prints held in the NGV Collection, this activity encourages children to create a connection between drawing and creative writing.

Make a Sculpture invites children to play with large-scale, interlocking shapes to build their own sculptures. Taking cues from Pablo Picasso’s methods of creating three-dimensional paper objects, this activity encourages children to play with scale and create ever-evolving structures.

Tony Ellwood AM, Director, NGV, said: ‘This NGV Kids exhibition will introduce families to a range of dynamic art activities that were used by pioneering artists of the 20th century. Through a mix of digital activities, sculpture creation, drawing and creative writing activities, we invite children to generate their own ideas and interact with themes featured in NGV’s world-premiere exhibition, The Picasso Century.’

The Picasso Century is a major ground floor exhibition at NGV International featuring over 80 works by Picasso alongside over 100 works by more than 60 of his contemporaries drawn from the Centre Pompidou, the Musée national Picasso-Paris, and the NGV Collection. The Picasso Century charts the extraordinary career of Pablo Picasso in dialogue with the many artists, poets, and intellectuals with whom he intercepted and interacted throughout the 20th century.

Making Art: Imagine Everything is Real is on display until 9 October 2022 at NGV International, St Kilda Road, Melbourne. Further information is available via the NGV website: NGV.MELBOURNE.
